Bharatanatyam is a South Indian Classical Dance at temples, which originated in Tamil Nadu and is considered one of the most difficult dance forms in India. It is from the 15th Century period.

Item: Thillana | Raga: Hamsadvani | Tala: Adi

This Thillana is an exuberant piece that showcases fast paced dancing with a short lyrical component at the end. It has unique dance patterns, accelerating in speed and rhythm. 

 

Performer: 

Thariniy Sutharsan has been a student of Usha Kala Niketan for 11 years. She was 2 years old when she began her journey with Usha Gupta. She continues to remain dedicated and devoted to her dance and Usha Gupta.

Kathak is one of the major forms of North Indian Classical Dance. The origin of Kathak is traditionally attributed to the traveling bards in ancient Northern India known as Kathakars or storytellers.

Item: Tarana from Mughal Period | Tala: Ektaal | Raga: Pahadi

Tarana concludes the Kathak repertoire with complex dance patterns set to an uncommon 12 beat time cycle. 

 

Performer: 

Indu S. has been dancing Kathak for 4 years in Singapore and has moved here to Edmonton, Alberta and has joyfully joined Usha Kala Niketan not long ago.

This is a rhythmic piece that is elevated by lively music and showcases different combinations of advanced techniques. This style requires exemplary skills in terms of rhythm, timing and synchronization in order to radiate its charm

Thariniy Sutharsan has been a student of Usha Kala Niketan for 11 years. She was 2 years old when she began her journey with Usha Gupta. She continues to remain dedicated and devoted to her dance and Usha Gupta. 

 

Siva Kannan has been a student of Usha Kala Niketan for 2 years and she's passionate about dance. She's committed to her dance and Usha Gupta.

Sun. July 16th Performance

Karakattam Folk Dance is an ancient folk dance of Tamil Nadu performed in praise of the rain goddess Mariamman. The ancient Tamil epic says that this type of dance derived from Bharatham and a mixture of multiple forms of Tamil dance forms like Bharatanatyam postures and mudras. The offering of this dance is to the goddess to bless rain.
