Submission Call

The Thousand Faces Festival is seeking submissions from aspiring, emerging, or established playwrights who are mythically curious or passionate about mytholgy!

Do you have an idea for a 10-20 minute play based in mythology that you've been itching to write?

Do you have a previously written, unproduced 10-20 minute play based in mythology that you're dying to see performed?

We want to hear from you!

Deadline to submit: May 1st, 2022 at 11:59pm MST

Keep reading for more details and submission guidelines.

The Edmonton Community Foundation is providing funding for this Series, and as such submissions are only open to playwrights who reside in Edmonton and its surrounding areas.*

We support inclusivity and strongly encourage submissions from all cultural backgrounds, orientations, identities, abilities, and ages.

A blind jury will select 4-6 plays from the submitted work.

Each chosen playwright will receive:

  • A fee of $600

  • Workshops and rehearsals for their play throughout the month of June,

all of which they will be encouraged and welcome to attend.

  • Dramaturgical & directorial support,

with an ensemble of 4 actors who will support them and their plays.

  • Public performances of their plays in late June/early July, 2022.

Exact dates and venue to be announced.

These performances will have limited technical and design elements, as we want the focus to be placed more on the development of the new plays rather than the final product.

One or more of the selected plays will also be performed at the Thousand

Faces Festival's 10th Anniversary String of Mythic Pearls in October, 2022!

All playwrights who submit to our New Mythic Works Series, whether

selected or not, will receive free admission to the public performances.

Submission Guidelines

  • Plays must be received by the deadline of May 1st, 2022 at 11:59 pm MST

To submit, we ask playwrights to fill out our Google Form. Plays must be submitted in PDF format.

  • Playwrights must reside within Edmonton and its surrounding areas*

Submissions from playwrights who reside outside of the Greater Edmonton area will not be considered.

  • Plays must be no longer than 20 minutes, and shouldn't be less than 10 minutes

It is a general rule of thumb that scripts with 12 pt. font (such as Times New Roman or Arial)

and double spaced between speaking parts runs 1 minute per page. We recommend reading it

aloud and timing yourself to ensure it fits within the 10-20 minute requirement.

  • The play should be a complete piece with a beginning, middle, and end

We ask that playwrights do not submit an excerpt from a longer work.

  • The play must have some connection to mythology

Some find the term "mythology" to be demeaning. For us, mythology is "The Song of the Universe," the realm of public dreams, anything where a person or people through trials expand their knowledge and understanding of their relationship to the infinite within and without them.

We would love to see playwrights write about myths from their own cultural background, or about myths  they love or feel inspired by! If you are feeling stuck and don't know what to write about, the Thousand Faces Festival would also love to read plays inspired by the myth of Persephone, or myths that centre around the themes of rebirth and renewal.

  • There must be no identifying information in the submitted scripts

This being a blind submission call, the jurors will not be privy to the names of the

submitting playwrights. Your name must not appear anywhere in your script.

  • The play should be able to be performed with a cast of 4 or less actors

The Thousand Faces Festival will be hiring an ensemble of 4 actors, who will be working on these plays.

  • Feel free to be creative with what kind of play you write!

You could write a shadow puppet show, musical, anything for any audience!

  • One submission per playwright

All plays submitted must be the original work of the submitting playwrights, and they must be the sole owner of the copyright.

To submit, please fill out our Google Form

We hope to notify selected playwrights by May 17th, 2022

Our Mandate

Our Mission is to foster the creation of mythic stories at the root of our cultures and share those stories with culturally diverse audiences so we may find we are all connected at the root.

“Myth basically serves four functions. The first is the mystical function,... realizing what a wonder the universe is, and what a wonder you are, and experiencing awe before this mystery....The second is a cosmological dimension, the dimension with which science is concerned – showing you what shape the universe is, but showing it in such a way that the mystery again comes through.... The third function is the sociological one – supporting and validating a certain social order.... It is the sociological function of myth that has taken over in our world – and it is out of date.... But there is a fourth function of myth, and this is the one that I think everyone must try today to relate to – and that is the pedagogical function, of how to live a human lifetime under any circumstances.”

- Joseph Campbell,
The Power of Myth
